Ablutophobia

Fear of bathing.  Okay, now this one is simply disgusting! But then there's not much you can do when you are scared of having a bath, can you? People with this phobia fear bathing and washing in general. And it happens to kids and women more than men. And all this, while I thought men don't have regular baths!

Acerophobia

I guess lemons are out of the question when you have a fear of sourness.

Achievemephobia

The fear of success. The opposite to the fear of failure.

Achondroplasiaphobia

The fear of midgets. Because they look differently.

Acrophobia

The fear of heights. Five percent of the general population suffer from this phobia.

Aeronausiphobia

Phobialist.com describes this phobia as the fear of vomiting due to airsickness.

Aerophobia

Those with aerophobia — the fear of drafts, air swallowing and airborne diseases or germs — may wish to wear face masks, especially in public.  ALSO, this is the well known fear of flying. 25 million Americans share a fear of flying.

Agliophobia

The fear of pain. Being afraid something painful will happen.

Agoraphobia

The fear of open or crowded spaces. People with this fear often wont leave home.

Agyrophobia

Even if there are no cars around, some people still suffer from the fear of crossing roads.

Aibohphobia

For those of you who don’t know, a palindrome is any word that is spelled the same both forwards and backwards. “Racecar” would be a good example. Aibohphobia is the fear of palindromes, which is intentionally a palindrome itself. This, however, is yet another made up phobia created by computer nerds in the early 80s.

Ailurophobia

The fear of cats. This phobia is also known as Gatophobia.

Albuminurophobia

This very specific phobia refers to the fear of kidney disease.

Alektorophobia

The fear of chickens. You may have this phobia if chickens make you panic.

Alliumphobia

Dracula must have had this, because it is the fear of garlic.

Allodoxaphobia

If you like to voice your thoughts on a particular subject, you may want to stay away from people with allodoxaphobia, or the fear of opinions, especially being afraid of hearing what others are thinking of you.

Amaxophobia

The fear of riding in cars is referred to as amaxophobia, and can cause problems especially for those living in suburban areas.

Amychophobia

People who suffer from amychophobia — the fear of scratches — are probably very protective of themselves and their skin.

Anatidaephobia

The fear of ducks. Somewhere, a duck is watching you.

Anatidaephobia

Fear of being watched by a duck.  This is seriously funny, but it's for real! People with this phobia fear that no matter where they are or what they are doing, a duck (yes! a duck) is watching them. No hen, no rabbit, specifically a duck. No comments.

Ancraophobia

The fear of wind is also called anemophobia.

The fear of men. Usually seen in younger females, but it can also affect adults.

Anklyophobia

Some people are actually afraid that their joints will stop working, and this fear is called anklyophobia.

Fear of flowers.  And I used to think flowers are pretty and a refreshing sight! But for some people with this phobia, flowers are their worst fears come alive! Sufferers of this phobia have a fear of flowers or even of their petals or stems, even though they know that flowers pose no danger to them whatsoever!

Anthropophobia

This phobia literally refers to the fear of people but can also mean the fear of having company.

Anuptaphobia

Does this hit on your 30th birthday, since it's the fear of being single?

Aphenphosmphobia

The fear of intimacy. Fear of being touched and love.

Aphephobia

This phobia causes people to feel afraid when touched.

Apiphobia

The fear of bees. Many people fear being stung by angry bees.

Apotemnophobia

People with amputations cause fear and anxiety in those who suffer from apotemnophobia.

Aquaphobia

The fear of water. Being afraid of water or being near water.

Arachibutyrophobia

Fear of peanut butter sticking to one’s palate.  Yes, this phobia is for real! Simply put, people who have this fear peanut butter sticking to the palate of their mouths. Of course, the best way to avoid this phobia is to not to have any peanut butter at all. Boom! Problem solved.   It was first mentioned in the Peanuts comic strip and pop culture has run with it ever since.

Arachnophobia

The fear of spiders affects women four times more (48% women and 12% men).

Arithmophobia

Arithmophobia means to the fear of numbers generally, but can also refer to the fear of math, numerals, certain numbers, calculations, and/or calculus.

Astraphobia

The fear of thunder/lightning AKA Brontophobia, Tonitrophobia, Ceraunophobia.  The reaction often causes a rapid heartbeat or labored breathing.

Asymmetriphobia

If you’re afraid of mismatched socks or asymmetrical objects, you have asymmetriphobia.

Ataxiophobia

The fear of not being able to use your muscles properly is called ataxiophobia.

Atephobia

Visiting ancient Greek or Roman ruins would be a nightmare for those with atephobia, or the fear of ruins and old buildings.

Athazagoraphobia

The fear of being forgotten or not remembering things.

Atychiphobia

The fear of failure. It is the single greatest barrier to success.

Aulophobia

It makes it really hard to enjoy Jethro Tull when you have a fear of flutes.

Aurophobia

Most people would be ecstatic to have the chance to find gold, but people who suffer from aurophobia are petrified of it.

Auroraphobia

Those who are afraid of the Northern Aurora lights have auroraphobia.

Autodysomophobia

If you have a bad or "vile" odor, you may trigger someone who has autodysomophobia.

Automatonophobia

The fear of human-like figures, like dummies or wax figures, is called automatonophobia.

The fear of bananas. If you have this phobia, they are scary.

The fear of depths can be anything associated with depth (lakes, tunnels, caves).

A fear of books is a sad fear, indeed.

Blennophobia

Unless you’re in a science fiction movie, you probably won’t come into contact with slime, but some people are afraid of it anyway.

Blood-injection-injury type phobia

This odd phobia group includes trypanophobia (the fear of injections); hemophobia (the fear of blood) and the fear of invasive medical procedures.

Body dysmorphic disorder

Also referred to as BDD, this body image disorder causes people to imagine that they have or will develop physical deformities.

Bolshephobia

Some people are afraid of meeting or hearing about Bolsheviks, and their disorder is called Bolshephobia.

Bromidrosiphobia

Fear of body odour.

Cacomorphobia

The fear of fat people. Induced by the media. Affects some anorexics/bulimics.

Cacophobia

Fear of ugliness. Sufferers actually have intense panic attacks around unattractive people or things.

Cainophobia

Sometimes called cainotophobia, this is the fear of anything new.

Carcinophobia

The fear of cancer. People with this develop extreme diets.

Cardiophobia

Although the heart is your lifeline, some people are afraid of it.

Cathisophobia

Conversely, this is the fear of sitting down.

Catoptrophobia

The fear of mirrors. Being afraid of what you might see.

Chaetophobia

Although some people with chaetophobia only fear loose or detached hair, others can be terrified by the hairs on their very own bodies.

Chemophobia

Those who get too carried away with organic diets or going green may be at risk for chemophobia, a condition that refers to the fear of all chemicals and preference for natural elements.

Chionophobia

Instead of hoping for snow, those with chionophobia must dread it.

Chirophobia

The reason you will never get a massage might be because you have a fear of hands.

Chorophobia

Weddings, prom, and parties must pose lots of problems for those who suffer from the fear of dancing.

Chrometophobia

Fear of money.  I wish everyone around me had this phobia so they'd pass all their money to me! People who have this phobia fear having excess money on them.

Chronophobia

The fear of the future or a fear of time. A persistent fear of what is to come,  the fear of time passing. Not surprisingly it is often found mostly in prison inmates or the elderly but it can also occur in people who experience a lot of stress and anxiety.

Cibophobia

The fear of food. The phobia may come from a bad episode while eating, like choking.

Claustrophobia

The fear of small spaces like elevators, small rooms and other enclosed spaces.

Coasterphobia

The fear of roller coasters. Ever seen Final Destination 3?

Consecotaleophobia

This makes going out for sushi difficult since this is the fear of chopsticks.

Coprastasophobia

Some people are actually terribly afraid of becoming constipated.

Coulrophobia

Fear of clowns -- Coulrophobia is a relatively common phobia, and usually present in children according to various surveys. The 'scary clown' has often been used in popular culture, for example in the form of the Joker in Batman comics and film adaptations. Coulrophobia has some celebrity sufferers- namely Daniel Radcliffe and Johnny Depp. Depp said of his clown fear: "it’s impossible, thanks to their painted-on smiles, to distinguish if they are happy or if they are about to bite your face off."

Cymophobia

It’s understandable that some people might be afraid of waves, but this phobia also refers to the fear of "wave-like motions."

Cynophobia

The fear of dogs. This includes everything from small Poodles to large Great Danes.

Decidophobia

While some of you may just be indecisive and apathetic, there are people out there who are genuinely terrified of making decisions, they are known as decidophobes.

Deipnophobia

Dinner parties, dining and dinner conversation are all off limits for people who suffer from this phobia.

Dendrophobia

Fear of trees. People with this phobia usually have strange stories about why they are terrified of a particular type of tree.

Descendophobia

For someone with descendophobia, walking down stairs or inclines can be a terrifying experience and many times they may get dizzy as well. On the other hand you could also have ascendophobia – fear of moving upwards.

Dextrophobia

People with this phobia do not like having objects situated to their right.

Didaskaleinophobia

If you’d rather skip class, just claim this phobia, which refers to the fear of going to school.

Disposophobia

The fear of getting rid of stuff triggers extreme hoarding.

Domatophobia

One wonders where people with this phobia — the fear of houses and being inside houses — live.

Dutchphobia

I guess that trip to Amsterdam will never happen, at least not with a fear of Dutch people and culture.  Some people believe that the Dutch are upsetting, perhaps because of their traditional costumes.

Ecclesiophobia

The fear of church and going to church is called ecclesiophobia.

Emetophobia

The fear of vomiting and the fear of loss of your self control.

Enochlophobia

The fear of crowds is closely related to Ochlophobia and Demophobia.Trypanophobia

Entomophobia

The fear of bugs and insects, also related to Acarophobia.

Ephebiphobia

This term refers to the fear of teenagers.

Equinophobia

The fear of horses is also called equinophobia.

Ereuthophobia

The fear of red lights is called ereuthophobia.

Ergophobia

If you miss a day at the office, you could try telling your boss that you’ve suddenly developed ergophobia, or the fear of work and/or functioning, often due to social or performance anxiety, , psychologists believe it is a combination of various fears such as failing at assigned tasks, social anxiety, and public speaking.

Euphobia

'The good news is we pinpointed your phobia. The bad news is your phobia is a fear of good news.'

Francophobia

Same goes for Paris if you're afraid of French people and culture, as well.

Galeophobia

The fear of sharks in the ocean or even in swimming pools.

Gamophobia

It’s not just an excuse: some people actually have a valid fear of getting married.  More generally, the fear of commitment or sticking with someone to the end.

Gelotophobia

Those who fear being laughed at — and actually evaluate social situations for "signs of laughter and ridicule" — suffer from gelotophobia

Geniophobia

Fear of chins.  This one sounds almost unreal. How can anyone fear a chin? How violent or deathly is a chin? People with this phobia cannot even interact or look at people whose chins they, well, don't like!

Genuphobia

The fear of knees or kneeling, or, the reason you never wear shorts in the summer. People who have this phobia have a fear of their own or someone else's knees. So, no skirts and shorts basically!

Gephyrophobia

If you have this phobia just make sure you don’t live close to the river because you would probably be too scared to cross any of its bridges. Some cities, however, provide services where they will actually drive your car across the bridge for you.

Gerascophobia

The fear of getting old. Aging is the most natural thing, yet many of us fear it.

Globophobia

Fear of balloons popping.  People who have this phobia can fear balloons in general or the sound produced when a balloon is popped. I have no idea how on Earth people with this phobia will ever be able to arrange a birthday party for their kids!

Glossophobia

The fear of public speaking. Not being able to do speeches.

Gynophobia

The fear of women. May occur if you have unresolved mother issues.Koumpounophobia

Hagiophobia

Holy figures and holy things or ideas are feared by people with hagiophobia.

Haphephobia

Whatever you do just make sure you don’t get too close to anyone with haphephobia…it’s the fear of being touched.

Heliophobia

In a sort of modern day vampirism, heliophobia is actually defined as fear of the sun. Although it sounds harmless, it can actually be quite serious and lead to vitamin D deficiency as a result of staying indoors.

Hellenologophobia

Confusing, highly technical terminology — including Greek terms — make those with hellenologophobia anxious.

Hemophobia

The fear of blood. Even the sight of blood can cause fainting.

Heterophobia

Homophobia is a well-known, though controversial, phobia, but heterophobia refers to the fear of heterosexuals.

If you were traumatized by The Omen, then you may have this phobia and it's fear of the number 666.

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

The longest town name in the world belongs to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in the United Kingdom and if you have hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia you might want to steer clear of that place. Why? Because you are afraid of long words. Seriously though, this is a joke phobia that often gets thrown around on the internet. There are no recorded cases…as of yet.

Hoplophobia

The fear of people who own firearms is called hoplophobia.

Hormephobia

Hormephobia refers to a person’s fear of experiencing shock, which is probably made more likely after an anxiety attack.

Hylophobia

Fear of trees.  Okay, no offence, but some trees actually do look really scary at times. Anyway, people who have this phobia fear trees, wood, and forests. It may be caused by watching all those fairy tales or stories which talk about the evil guys staying in the forests. So go easy with the fables, alright? 

Iatrophobia

The fear of doctors. Do you delay doctor visits? You may have this.

Ichthyophobia

The fear of fish. Includes small, large, dead and living fish.

Injury phobia

If you’re afraid of being injured, you have injury phobia.

Ithyphallophobia

This phobia must be hard to deal with, since it the fear of having/seeing/thinking about an erect penis.

Kakkorhaphiophobia

Fear of failure.

Katsaridaphobia

The fear of cockroaches. This can easily lead to an excessive cleaning disorder.

Kinemortophobia

The fear of zombies. Being afraid that zombies attack and turn you into them.

Koinoniphobia

Fear of being in a room full of people.

Macrophobia

Doctor’s offices and holiday shopping trips must be nightmares for people who suffer from macrophobia, or the fear of long waits.

Cooking is a source of anxiety for people with mageirocophobia.

Fear that one’s penis is visible through one’s clothes.

The fear of change. Sometimes change is a good thing.

According to recent surveys, more than half of people in the UK suffer from it. The phobia is brought on by the fear of losing signal, running out of battery or even losing sight of a mobile phone.

The fear of numbers and the mere thought of calculations.

If fairy tales have taught us anything, it is that we should all have this phobia, which is the fear of the woods in the night.

Fear of nighttime or the dark. An adult (the fear is common among children) may understand that there is nothing to be afraid of, but he or she still experiences heightened anxiety when the lights go out.

Octophobia

This one is infinitely scary, since it is fear of the figure 8.

Oikophobia

Imagine being scared of your toaster…and your oven, and your refrigerator, and every other household appliance you own. For people with oikophobia, c’est la vie.

Ombrophobia

Fear of rain -- Ombrophobes have an abnormal fear of rain which can cause severe anxiety attacks. It is thought to be triggered by a number of factors, including the fact that children are often told not to go out in the rain because it will make them ill. Rain is also often associated with depression.

Omphalophobia

Fear of the navel -- Omphalophobia is the fear of bullybuttons. Sufferers are afraid to have their bellybuttons touched, or to touch another person's belly button. The fear is often linked with the belly button's association to the umbilical cord.

Oneirogmophobia

All teen boys must suffer from this phobia since it is the fear of wet dreams.

Ophidiophobia

The fear of snakes. Phobics avoid certain cities because they have more snakes.

Optophobia

Opening one’s eyes is just too stressful for some individuals.

Ornithophobia

The fear of birds — especially pigeons — is referred to as ornithophobia, and is actually a fairly common phobia.

Panophobia

Everything. You are literally scared of everything, or the fear that terrible things will happen.  Also known as omniphobia, this generalized fear describes the condition of fearing everything and is often described as constantly dreading some “vague and persistent unknown evil”.

Fear of the pope -- The fear of the pope or the papacy is uncommon. It is closely related to Hierophobia (the fear of holy individuals or sacred things). It is also related to hagiophobia which is an exaggerated or irrational fear or dislike of saints a

Paper is the cause of great anxiety and even fear in people who suffer from papyrophobia.

Yep, you can probably thank Michael Myers and his William Shatner mask for forever being scared of the date Friday the 13.  About 8% of Americans have this phobia.

Parthenophobia

Those who are afraid of virgins and young girls suffer from parthenophobia.

Pediophobia

The fear of dolls. This phobia could well be Chucky-induced.

Pedophobia

Children are actually frightening to people with pedophobia.

Peladophobia

Fear of going bald or fear of bald people.

Pentheraphobia

Fear of mother-in-laws.  This is the discovery Indian bahus have been waiting for. The sufferers of this phobia have extreme fear of their mother-in-laws. Better start looking for an orphan partner then!

Phagophobia

This one could truly be hard to live with. Phagophobia is the fear of swallowing and in some cases it can actually lead to weight loss and malnutrition.

Phasmophobia

The fear of ghosts. AKA Spectrophobia. Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

Philophobia

Although butterflies in the stomach are often associated with love, for someone with philophobia those butterflies are more like deadly scorpions, as they are petrified of falling in love. Unfortunately many people in this category end up living a life of solitude and fear of commitment.

Philosophobia

It can be a challenging subject, but for some individuals, philosophy is legitimately terrifying.

Phobophobia

This condition is described as a rare disorder and refers to the fear of having a phobia.  People suffering from this phobia live in the fear that they might develop a phobia. Far too ironic.  More generally, the thought of being afraid of objects/situations.

Photophobia

The fear of light caused by something medical or traumatic.

Pocrescophobia

Fear of putting on weight.

Podophobia

The fear of feet. Some people fear touching or looking at feet, even their own.

Pogonophobia

Fear of beards -- The term pogonophobia has been used since the 1850s to describe a strong fear of beards. People who have this fear can have full blown panic attacks seeing people with beards.

Porphyrophobia

The color purple causes some people to be very afraid and develop this condition.

Pseudodysphagia

The fear of choking often after a bad eating experience.

Pteridophobia

For some, being near ferns is too frightening.

Pteronophobia

The idea of being tickled with feathers is upsetting for those with pteronophobia.

Pyrophobia

The fear of fire. A natural/primal fear that can be debilitating.

Ranidaphobia

The fear of frogs. Often caused by episodes from childhood.

Rhabdophobia

This anxiety disorder means several things: the fear of magic and a magic wand, being beaten by a rod, or being very harshly criticized.

Rhypophobia

People who are afraid of defecation have rhypophobia, and are at risk for other health problems.

Fear of vampires.  It literally means ‘fear of blood-eaters’.   At least people who suffer from this won't have to sit through the torture of the Twilight movie series! The fear of crime involves being afraid of burglars, attackers or crime in general.

I'm sure Peter Pan didn't have this phobia; it's fear of shadows.

The fear of worms. Often because of unhygienic conditions.

Scopophobia

Fear of being stared at.

If you ask a celebrity for an autograph and they decline, they may not be jerks but suffer from this phobia, which is the fear of writing in public.

Selenophobia

Remus Lupin's fear, which is that of the moon.

Ironically, the fear of long words.

The fear of cotton balls or plastic foams. Oh that sound.

The fear of eating is called sitophobia, and can become very serious.

Sociophobia

Those who fear being judged by society suffer from sociophobia.

Somniphobia

Fear of falling asleep.  Being terrified of what might happen right after you fall asleep.  Somniphobia comprises often irrational and excessive fear of sleep. Somniphobes may fear falling asleep because they associate going to bed with dying. It may also result from a feeling of lack of control or from suffering repeated nightmares. Somniphobics may also fear losing time while sleeping.  Oftentimes it can be the result of people feeling as though they are losing control and nightmares have been known to cause it as well.

Sophophobia

Those who are afraid of learning anything new have sophophobia.

Soteriophobia

Some seriously independent-minded individuals may have soteriophobia, or the fear of becoming dependent on someone else.

Spectrophobia

Those who are too afraid to look at their own reflection in a mirror have spectrophobia.

Sphexophobia

The fear of wasps. You panic and fear getting stung by it.

Symbolophobia

Figurative and symbolic ideas can become a legitimate phobia for some.

Syngenesophobia

While there are certainly jokes about scary stepmothers or in-laws, this phobia refers to the fear of all relatives.

Syphilophobia

One hopes that having a fear of syphilis would inspire more responsible romantic encounters.

Tachophobia

Anyone who suffers from tachophobia — the fear of speed — may be afraid of riding in cars or trains.

Taphophobia

The fear of being buried alive by mistake and waking up in a coffin underground.

Technophobia

The fear of technology is often induced by culture/religion.

Telephonophobia

The fear of talking on the phone. Phobics prefer texting.

Thalassophobia

The fear of the ocean. Water, waves and unknown spaces.

Thanatophobia

The fear of death. Even talking about death can be hard.

Theophobia

The fear of God causes an irrational fear of God or religion.

Tokophobia

The fear of pregnancy involves giving birth or having children.

Transphobia

The fear of transsexual or transgender people is called transphobia.

Triskaidekaphobia

Fear of the number 13 or the bad luck that follows.  Many people are superstitious about the number 13 but few have a fully fledged phobia. It is closely associated with the fear of Friday 13. Sufferers take great care to avoid using, or doing anything related to the number.

Tropophobia

Fear of change.

Trypanophobia

The fear of needles, or could be more specific, such as the fear of injection with a hypodermic needle. This phobia has a history in genetic memory. Thousands of years ago, the people who avoided being stabbed in general were the most likely to survive.

Trypophobia

Fear of holes -- Sufferers of trypophobia fear objects with small holes. It is not yet considered an official phobia, although thousands of people are reported to suffer from it. According to new research trypophobics associate holes with danger. Examples of feared objects include honeycomb, sponges and any plant with small holes in it. Turophobia

Fear of cheese --   It's rather shocking to know that some people fear cheese. The poor souls have no idea how great it tastes! While some people may fear some particular cheese types, others may fear cheese altogether. SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING!  Sufferers of Turophobia usually associate cheese with a traumatic memory. From cheddar to mozzarella turophobes often have to run away if they so much as see a slice of cheese. Some may fear one type of cheese while others may fear cheese altogether.

Uranophobia

Fear of heaven -- Sufferers of uranophobia fear the sky and the afterlife. It can be triggered in religious believers who fear the idea that they will be judged after life.

Vehophobia

The fear of driving. This phobia affects personal and work life.

Venustraphobia

Also known as caligynephobia, this is the fear of beautiful women, and may be caused by low self-confidence or putting too much pressure on appearances.   Good thing I don't have this or else I would have never married my wife.

Walloonphobia

This disorder refers to the fear of Walloons, a group of people of German and Celtic origin living in Belgium.

Xanthophobia

Fear of the colour yellow -- Sufferers of xanthophobia may fear anything yellow, including the sun, daffodils and yellow paint. In its most aggressive form xanthophobic symptoms may include an overwhelming fear of even the phrase yellow.

Xenophobia

The fear of the unknown. Fearing anything or anyone that is strange or foreign.Achievemephobia

The fear of dryness is also called xerophobia.

Zemmiphobia

It certainly sounds frightening: zemmiphobia is the fear of "the great mole rat."
